Mother Pluckers
I have just been alerted to the fact that PETA has declared May a "month of action against KFC." As a former PETA member (I was young once) and a veteran of many animal rights' battles, this brings me much sadness. Even in the days of vegetarianism, I always enjoyed the best mashed potatoes and gravy money could buy. O well, at least the KFC down the block has closed and is being replaced by yet another Mexican eatery (this one has seafood, too!).

Marine Layer Blues
It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place
Except you and me;
So set 'em up Joe, I got a little story
I think you should know.
We're drinking my friend, to the end
Of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby,
And one more for the road....
I spent a couple of hours watching the A&E Biography on the Rat Pack this past Sunday night. I really wish I'd watched the full four hours, but when you have such quality programming as The Simpsons to choose from, it makes one's decisions difficult. Not only that, but I didn't realize it was on until just after Sammy Davis Jr. had lost his eye. Nonetheless, I've spent the last few days in a sort of blue haze, partly due to the marine layer hovering around this week, but also because I just can't get "One For My Baby" out of my head. Not to mention the fact that I keep calling my dog "Smokie," Sinatra's nickname for Sammy Davis Jr. Something about those times, seeing the footage from the Sands, the bar on the stage with the guys fixing drinks, Dean getting soused (or more soused), and poor Jerry Lewis crying somewhere, but not there, that he felt "loooonely." If I could find the right hat I would wear it, but instead I think I'll just sing to myself.
Well that's how it goes, and Joe I know your gettin'
Anxious to close,
Thanks for the cheer,
I hope you didn't mind
My bending your ear;
But this torch that I found, It's gotta be drowned
Or it's gonna explode;
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road.
